Day 239 Two very different routes the urban No 360 and rural No 361.

I took the 1230 train to Clapham Junction and then crossed to the London Overground platform for the 1322 Stratford train two stops to West Brompton. The District line then conveyed me in two parts as I had to change at Earl's Court and arrived at South Kensington which was thronging with families. I found the crush was all around the station though, and once I was inside the passageway to the Science museum it was relatively quiet. I arrived at Prince Consort Road by the Royal Albert Hall at stop RZ at 1357 just after a bus had left.

The No 360 route every 10-13 minutes taking 40.

It was then at 1408 that I was aboard London General's SEe43 an earlier version of the last bus I had been on yesterday. This is the only bus that serves this road and Exhibition Road, only joining with other routes at South Kensington station and then only briefly. Having passed the station at 1414 the bus turned hard left along Pelham Street once again on its own and it remained thus until we reached Sloane Square at 1423. We crossed straight over Fulham Road to reach Sloane Square but no other bus routes were seen until this point.

The bus went initially down Lower Sloane Street but about half way along we were told the bus was going on diversion. It first went left down Pimlico Road and then took Ebury Bridge Road and thus over the throat of Victoria station. After doing the last manoeuvre the bus turned right down Sutherland Street which is normally only served by the C10.

At the bottom of this road we reached Lupus Street and rejoined the normal route of the No 360 which sees us pass Pimlico Station at 1435. Beyond this the bus turned right into Vauxhall Bridge Road and then crossed Vauxhall Bridge to enter the bus station at 1440.

A No 360 about to cross Vauxhall Bridge whilst we head alongside the riverbank

After doing a circuit the bus headed east along the southern bank of the Thames before turning right down Black Prince Road as its sole service bus. After going under the main railway lines into Waterloo the bus reached Kennington Road. Here we joined three other routes and turning left ran around two sides of the Imperial War museum. Beyond this we had to follow the one way route around St George's Circus and down London Road to turn left and terminate at Newington Causeway at 1501.

To get to the next bus I had to walk to Elephant and Castle mainline station and catch the 1519 to St Albans. This train 700003 was one that stopped at all stations so I didn't arrive at St Albans City station until 1610. I then had to walk to St Peter's Street which is actually one half of the main shopping street. I arrived about 1620 an found the next No 361 to Borehamwood was at 1642 so went in search of sustenance.

Red Eagle is the bus company which run the service and this company seems to use a good many ex-London buses. The one I used was ex-Metroline DE1896 and this was still marked on the inside along with a good many TFL signs. I was aboard at 1637 and it was very smartly that we left and headed down the hill which is called Chequer Street with a brief view of the abbey.

Abbey Theatre

In quick succession we reached the Abbey station and Abbey theatre and then headed up the old A5 now the A5183 to St Stephen's church. At this roundabout the bus took the road towards Watford and at the same time the drizzle became persistent. At Chiswell Green the bus went left down Tippendell Lane and after a while we crossed the A405 where it said road closed. Soon though we turned right up Penn Road and into the settlement of How Wood.

The bus followed a sweeping curve to intercept Park Street Lane where we turned right and this took us over the M25 and a right fork meant we entered Bricket Wood. We took a circuitous route around this housing area with Lye Lane, the West Riding, South Riding, Blackboy Wood and Hunters Ride before finally taking Mount Pleasant Lane and after crossing under the railway we took Station Road past Bricket Wood railway station. Had we continued beyond The Gate public house we would have returned to Park Street Lane but here we turned abruptly right along Smug Oak Lane.

After a short while the bus swung right into a new housing development- Hanstead Park. Later the driver told me this used to be an HSBC training establishment and there were some large buildings that are obviously converted into flats. We waited here from 1702-1705 before resuming our journey down Smug Oak Lane. This road led us back to the old A5 and we took this in the direction of Radlett. We had so far only had one person join the bus but now four joined and as we got closer to Radlett more and more people boarded the bus. We passed a No 338 going the other way at this point.

Instead of remaining on the old A5 to Elstree the bus took the left of Theobald Street and was soon in very rural surroundings until we entered the Borough of Elstree and Borehamwood at 1718. At the first  stop the lady who had accompanied me all the way from St Albans alighted and we then continued in a straight line all the way to Elstree and Borehamwood station where we arrived at 1724.

Another No 357 I could have chosen at Elstree station

A circuit here and again at Tesco's saw us following the route of the No 107 up Elstree Way. However, we took Studio Way which took us up past the Travelodge where Charmaine and I stayed when she was filming a couple of Januarys ago.

Beyond the hotel the road names become named after film studios-Pinewood, Denham, Shepperton, Ealing etc. At the end of the road the bus went left and left again to terminate at Alexandra road at 1733.

Alexandra Road Well End Borehamwood

The driver explained he was going back to St Albans in three minutes so I might as well get back on and he'd drop me at the station. This actually meant I had the opportunity to ride the length of Alexandra Road, then Potters Lane and Denham Way back to Studio Way. This time the road names were big names such as Grenfell, Robeson, Novello, etc. I arrived back in time for the 1801 train to Sutton. This dropped me at 1913 at Mitcham Junction where I caught a tram to Wandle Park and then a No 407 home.

Day 238 These two are nearby again the No 358 followed by the No 359.

After the No 357 in NE London had been rather truncated I thought I might do the No 357 which I knew was close by, from Selsdon to Reigate. This bus was operated by Southdown PSV but all their services have been taken over by Metrobus Ltd. So I caught a No 412 from Purley to Selsdon library and waited for the No 357 at 1518 as indicated by the timetable. However, when I arrived there was No 357 indicated on the bus stops and no messages as there had been at Whipps Cross. When the No 409 came just before 1600 I asked the driver about the No 357 I was waiting for and he said it was discontinued in 2021.

So for the No 358 I caught a No 157 from the Waddon pub to Crystal Palace at 1356 and arrived at the top of Anerley Hill at 1428.

with cones around it. These buses are expected to take over in
three weeks.

I walked across to the parade bus station and found there was one of the new Irizar electric buses parked, but it was an older Metrobus No 754 that quickly appeared to take me at 1437 round the corner and back down Anerley Hill. At 1445 I had reached Anerley station and by 1455 was turning left at the top of Elmers End Road.

This road led us to Penge where we turned right and headed for Beckenham.

At the war memorial roundabout the bus turned right to run past Beckenham Hospital and on towards Elmers End where we arrived at 1505.

At the roundabout we took Upper Elmers End Road to Eden Park station and beyond this turned hard left under the railway line and on to the Chinese Garage. This road was served only by the No 358 until recently whilst now the Supaloop SL5 accompanies it.

Chinese Garage taken over my shoulder

From the Chinese Garage we took Hayes Lane until we met Shortlands Road and then turning left, the No 358 was for first time, the only bus to service the road. It wasn't long however before the No 367 joined us from the left and then moved away to the right. At Shortlands railway station the bus turned right and made for Bromley at 1520. At the top of the hill instead of the bus turning right we were told the bus was being diverted.

Indeed the bus went left then right along Tweedy Road past Bromley North station without stopping and regaining its route at the top of Kentish Way. Thus we returned to Bromley High Street and stopped at Bromley South station at 1528. The bus then headed for the A21 passing The Crown on Bromley Common at 1538, an hour after leaving Crystal Palace. After passing the Princess Royal University Hospital the No 358 forges on alone taking Farnborough High Street just as the R4 joins the Farnborough Bypass.

At 1547 we reached the location where the No 47 and No 51 buses used to terminate when I was young before the creation of the No 358 in the 1980s-this was The George and Dragon.

The bus continued on its own until it reached Shire Lane at the bottom of Farnborough Hill. The No R8 joined the bus from here to run past the Metrobus garage where I espied another two of the new electric 'Trambuses'. As we turned left we joined four other buses all of the R (Roundabout) type for the run to Orpington High Street. Instead of turning left at the war memorial and heading up to the station straight away, the bus went forward into the first part of the High Street. The bus turned right into Holmesdale Road and right again to Spur Road which enabled the bus to again reach the war memorial and this time we did climb Station Road up to Orpington Station where the bus terminated at 1403.

will disappear for the second time shortly

I caught a No R4 to the alleyway on Tubbenden Lane to visit our daughter and an hour or so later I walked back to the station to catch a No 353 to Addington Interchange. I arrived at the Interchange at 1800 and checking on the bus stop it seemed I had 15 minutes to wait for the next No 359.

Unusual pattern approx every 45 minutes

Bus arrives from Purley

The bus which arrived from Purley was number SEe167 of London General, one of the two dedicated to this service on delivery. The service runs every 45 minutes and as it takes less than 25 minutes two buses is adequate to fulfil it.

Ready to depart from layover

Reaching the Gravel Hill roundabout

The bus arrived exactly as expected and I was the only person to board at this point. The bus circulated around the bus station and headed west along Kent Gateway to the Gravel Hill roundabout. The bus continued past the roundabout and picked up someone opposite a small parade of shops and then continued up the A2022 along with the No 64. A little distance beyond the parade the bus went right into the Monks Hill estate along Farnborough Avenue. The bus then followed a loop along Heathfield Vale, Broadcombe and Tedder Road before returning back along Heathfield Vale to the A2022 via Farnborough Avenue at 1825.

The bus then headed up the A2022 to Selsdon and on to Sanderstead.

Beyond All Saints Sanderstead the bus went right at the roundabout initially down Sanderstead Hill but soon bared left on Purley Downs Road. At the end of Purley Downs Road the bus turned left along Brighton Road and terminated just past Purley Hospital opposite Purley URC at 1841. The journey actually took 26 minutes.

Journey's End

To get home I caught a No 439 to Waddon station and walked and then took a No 410 one stop to arrive home at 1905.
